This Edwardian sterling silver sovereign case, made by Horton & Allday in Birmingham in 1910, is a gentleman's accessory. The silver object is circular in shape and features fine engine-turned engraving across its surface, along with a vacant circular cartouche at the centre, a push-button release, and a top suspension ring. The case measures 3 cm in width, 5 cm in height, and 1.75 cm in depth, with a total weight of 19.6 g. In a modern home, this piece serves as a display item for a collection of antique silver or pocket-watch accessories. It sits on a desk, shelf, or within a cabinet as a decorative object representing early twentieth-century metalwork.

Sovereign cases were engineered in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to store and protect gold sovereign coins. Equipped with an internal spring-loaded mechanism, they allowed the user to extract single coins safely while attached to an Albert chain or pocket watch fob.

Edwardian sovereign cases were predominantly made from sterling silver, gold plate, or solid gold. Internal mechanisms typically contained steel springs, while the outer casing featured hand-engraved or machine-turned guilloche patterns.

Authentic British silver sovereign cases display full hallmarks, including a makers mark, town mark, silver purity mark (such as the lion passant), and a date letter. Check for consistent hallmark stamps across both halves of the case and the suspension ring.

These cases can be worn as statement pendants on modern silver neck chains or retained on traditional pocket watch chains. They are also displayed within shallow shadow boxes or placed on dressing table tray arrangements alongside historic pocket accessories.

Clean silver sovereign cases gently using a soft, non-abrasive silver polishing cloth to remove surface tarnish. Avoid submerging the case in liquid silver dip, as moisture can compromise the internal steel spring mechanism and cause rust.
