A Victorian brooch from c1870, created in the Victorian and Gothic style, takes the form of an oval mount enclosing a central banded agate cabochon in black. The piece incorporates 15ct gold, enamel in a blue shade, and seed pearls bordering the perimeter. The photograph shows the grey textile background, the individual claws securing each seed pearl, and the polished convex surface of the central stone. The solid gold casing fastens at the rear with a traditional 'C' clasp and is gently curved to sit comfortably over fabric. Measuring 2 cm high, 3 cm wide, and 1 cm deep, this item functions as a wearable accessory suitable for fastening garments such as scarves, shawls, or lapels in contemporary wardrobes. Collectors of period jewellery acquire such items for personal adornment or display, utilising the secure pin fastening on everyday attire or special occasion outfits. The construction exhibits no breaks, splits, or losses across the enamel and stone settings.

Victorian agate and enamel jewellery grew in popularity during the mid-19th century, heavily influenced by Queen Victorias affinity for Scottish banded agates and mourning attire. Cobalt blue enamel combined with seed pearls often symbolized devotion and remembrance, making these pieces classic examples of sentimental Victorian adornments.

Brooches from this period were commonly crafted using 15ct gold, a standard British gold purity legalized in 1854. They frequently featured hardstones such as banded agate or onyx, hand-applied vitreous enamel, and natural split seed pearls.

Authentic pieces typically feature hand-cut natural agate, fine vitreous enamel work, and traditional tubed or C-clasp pin fittings. Gold items from Great Britain produced between 1854 and 1932 often carry specific 15ct fineness stamps or hallmarks.

Antique brooches can be worn attached to tailored coat lapels, modern velvet blazers, or silk scarves to add historical contrast to modern tailoring. Alternatively, they can be displayed on framed velvet mounts or trinket trays within a dressing area.

Clean gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding submersion in water or chemical ultrasonic cleaners. Excessive moisture can loosen foil backings or damage organic seed pearls and delicate enamel.
