Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 1910 Art Deco picture frame combines sterling silver and tortoiseshell with a glass window and an oak wood easel back. The rectangular profile displays a mottled brown tortoiseshell border encased inside a slim, unblemished sterling silver outer rim. Visible details include the square corners, the subtle grain variation in the dark brown veneer, and the reflective metallic sheen of the silver border. Measuring 23.4 cm high and 18.4 cm wide, the piece accommodates a 19 cm by 14.6 cm photograph within its window. In a modern interior, this item sits on a mantelpiece, side table, or desk within a study or gentleman's library. The clean lines and contrasting metallic and organic tones complement both period and contemporary settings. Placing the frame upright displays a cherished portrait while adding a polished decorative accent to the room.

FAQs

Luxury tabletop accessories combining organic materials like tortoiseshell with precious metals became highly popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly during the Edwardian and Art Deco periods.

These frames typically feature a shell veneer secured over a backing panel, held in place and edged with polished sterling silver rims or corner mounts.

Authentic sterling silver components carry official British assay hallmarks indicating silver purity, maker, and date, while genuine tortoiseshell displays subtle, irregular mottled patterning under light without uniform synthetic mould marks.

Position the frame on a desk, mantelpiece, or bedside table alongside structured books and metal accessories to add a refined accent to modern decor.

Gently clean the silver border with a specialised silver polishing cloth while keeping chemical cleansers away from the tortoiseshell, which should be stored out of direct sunlight and high heat.
