This Edwardian photo frame, made in 1916 by Mappin & Webb in London, takes the form of a large rectangular sterling silver piece with a polished finish and a plain border. The visual details include a cast silver ribbon and bow motif at the top, a glass picture window displaying fabric in shades of dark blue and greyish white, and a polished metallic surface. The frame measures 36.8 cm high and 27.9 cm wide, housing a picture window of 31.7 cm by 22.8 cm. In a modern home, this piece suits placement on a sideboard top in a living room, hallway, or study. It provides a classic way to display family portraits or art prints while bringing traditional English country house character to an interior.

Traditional sterling silver photo frames originated in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as decorative tabletop accessories designed to display portrait photography. They typically feature a solid sterling silver front panel mounted on a supportive wooden or leather back with an easel stand.

Silver frames consist of a sterling silver face stamped with official purity hallmarks, backed with materials such as mahogany, velvet, or leather. The aperture is fitted with protective glass, while a hinged easel leg provides balance on flat surfaces.

Authentic British sterling silver frames feature a set of official hallmarks stamped along the outer edge or rim, including the makers mark, town mark, silver purity mark, and date letter.

Position silver frames on dark timber or stone surfaces such as sideboards, desks, or mantelpieces to create visual contrast. Grouping multiple frames of varying scale together forms a curated tabletop vignette.

Dust the frame regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and polish the silver surfaces gently using a dedicated silver polishing cloth. Avoid abrasive liquid cleaners or immersing the item in water to preserve the backing material and glass.
