Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This unusual Edwardian Art Deco bookmark from 1920 belongs in a gentleman's library or on an office desk. The item uses sterling silver and green celluloid. The design includes a marbled effect on the tapered blade, a silver cap, a chain link, and a fully cast running greyhound figure. The metal shows silver and the celluloid displays shades of green and white, complemented by the cast canine form. The sterling silver mount carries a patent number, and the greyhound figure is marked silver. The bookmark stands 10.5 cm high, 2 cm wide, and 0.3 cm deep, excluding the attached figure. Users place it between the pages of books on a study table, desk, or bookshelf. The object functions as a practical page marker and a collector's item.

FAQs

Originating in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, silver and celluloid bookmarks were crafted as practical reading accessories and decorative desk novelties. Celluloid offered a lightweight, colourful alternative to tortoiseshell or stone, often paired with hallmarked silver accents.

Page markers from the early 20th century typically combined early thermoplastics such as celluloid or vulcanite with precious metal mounts, including sterling silver or silver plate. Chains and cast metal charms, often depicting animals or sports, were frequently integrated into the design.

Authentic silver bookmarks feature British hallmarks or makers stamps on the metal cap or charm, indicating purity and date of manufacture. Original celluloid blades exhibit a distinct marbled or faux-mineral appearance and feel lighter in weight than glass or stone.

These functional objects are commonly displayed on styled bookshelves, placed across an open antique book on a coffee table, or arranged in a glass trinket tray on a writing desk.

Silver elements should be cleaned gently with a dry microfibre cloth or specialised silver polishing cloth to remove oxidisation. Celluloid components must be kept away from direct heat, sunlight, and moisture to prevent warping or deterioration.
