Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Georgian breakfront library bookcase is an 18th-century piece made from warm brown mahogany with glass doors and flame mahogany panels. The structure comprises three upper doors with single horizontal glazing bars enclosing adjustable shelves, a moulded waist board, and a lower cupboard base with blind doors containing adjustable shelves and removable trays. The entire cabinet rests upon a plinth base and displays a moulded cornice at the top. The timber exhibits rich figuring and natural variations in tone across the panelled doors, complemented by visible grain patterns and fine linear mouldings framing each section. Measuring 231 cm high by 192 cm wide and 47 cm deep, the unit provides extensive storage for books, ceramics, or decorative objects while occupying a relatively modest floor footprint. Positioned in a study, library, or formal living room today, the bookcase serves as a functional display and storage cabinet for traditional interiors. The glazed upper section allows books or collections to remain visible yet protected from dust, whilst the solid lower cupboards conceal items out of sight. The balanced proportions suit larger reception rooms or dedicated home offices, coordinating naturally with traditional timber desks, leather armchairs, and classical architectural details. The piece requires floor space against a substantial wall and functions effectively as a focal point for displaying bound volumes or decorative arts within a domestic interior.

FAQs

A breakfront bookcase is an architectural storage unit where the central section projects forward beyond the flanking side wings, a style popularised in 18th-century Britain.

These cabinets feature flame mahogany veneers applied over oak or pine carcasses, constructed using hand-cut dovetail joints and glazed individual glass panes within wooden astragal bars or door frames.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-sawn secondary timbers, slight irregularities in hand-blown glass, historical brass hardware, and original hand-cut joinery along cabinet backs and drawer linings.

Place the bookcase as an architectural focal point against a main wall, using the display shelves to house curated ceramic collections or books alongside subtle directional lighting.

Dust the surfaces regularly using a soft microfibre cloth, apply a high-grade natural beeswax polish twice per year, and maintain consistent ambient humidity to protect the timber veneers from movement.
