A Heavy Pair of Sold Brass Wall Lights.

19th century
For Sale by Limited Editions
Description

These three branch wall lights are a very solid pair with good moldings and good detail. They were originally gas we suspect and were then wired for electricity as was quite common. They have the been used for candles so will need to be rewired for electric.

They are really keenly priced at £110 for the quality and we have taken into account the fact they do need some work but they will be superb when done. We have intentionally not cleaned these so that they do not look new or reproduction which they certainly are not. If you wanted to clean them it is of course very possible to do but you may wish to retain that age patination.

We could easily see these well into the hundreds of pounds when restored, Please just look at others of this quality elsewhere to be reassured. Wall gas lights came into use in the early half of the 1800s if one was wealthy but usually were more common in the latter half of that century and into the early 1900s, when electric stated to take over.

give us a call to discuss with pleasure. 07957479998. We can post if required which is likely to cost under £20

Limited Editions has dated these Antique Brass Wall Sconces to the 1880s.

A heavy pair of solid brass wall lights in the neoclassical style, dating from 1880, bring grand Regency character to interiors. Each sconce displays a fluted urn-shaped backplate, triple curved branches, drip pans, candle sockets, and a bottom finial detail, finished in an aged brass colour with uncleaned patination. The metal shows visible signs of age and wear across its surface, with three-arm configurations and distinct moulded backplates. Measuring 39 cm high, 39 cm wide, and 34 cm deep, these wall lights are suited for placement in a fireplace alcove to frame a chimney breast, or mounted flanking a mirror or hallway console table. They require rewiring for modern electrical use before installation.

Neoclassical brass sconces draw inspiration from classical Greek and Roman architecture, featuring symmetrical forms, fluted motifs, urn shapes, and delicate scrolling branches designed to support candles or light fittings.

Traditional sconces are constructed from cast brass, often utilizing the lost-wax or sand-casting method, with individual elements such as branches, backplates, and drip pans cast separately and assembled with threaded rods or pins.

Authentic pieces display substantial physical weight, natural patina in crevices, irregularity from hand-casting processes, and historical joinery such as square nuts or hand-cut threads rather than modern standardized screws.

Mounting sconces on either side of a fireplace, mirror, or artwork provides balanced accent lighting, while pairing natural aged brass with dark or neutral painted walls creates a refined visual contrast.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth. To maintain an aged patina, avoid abrasive metal polishes and chemical cleaners; an application of neutral microcrystalline wax can protect the metal surface.
