Huge 5 Inch Asprey Sterling Silver Campaign Buffer 1926 Antique Military

1900 - 1920
Description

A superb very unusually large English antique solid sterling silver buffer. It is hallmarked for London 1926 with the maker being Asprey. It has been superbly designed having fold down handles - I suspect it would have been used by a military officer possibly for buffing buttons or boots , its seems too large to buff nails. It is in super condition being free from dings splits and repairs. It measure almost 5 inches (12.2cms) long by 2 inches by the same tall with the handles erect. It weighs 146 grams. A well made very unusual piece.

This unusual vanity accessory is a solid sterling silver campaign buffer from the 1920s Art Deco period, made by Asprey and hallmarked in London for 1926. The piece displays a silver finish with an engine-turned pattern across the body, a folding rectangular handle attached via two hinges on small square mounts, English hallmarks, and a soft chamois pad base in a tan or olive-gold tone. The silver components show clean surfaces free from dings, splits, and repairs. It measures 12.2 cm long. In a contemporary home, this item serves as a decorative vanity accessory or dressing table display piece, well-suited for placement on a bedside table or mantle. The folding handle mechanism and heavy silver construction make it an interesting tactile object for display among other vintage metalware collections.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, luxury silversmiths created portable grooming items tailored for travel and military officers campaign chests. These items often featured compact folding mechanisms or fitted cases to protect delicate parts during transport.

Antique buffers typically consist of a solid sterling silver top or frame paired with a leather or chamois pad on the underside. High-end examples frequently feature engine-turned geometric decoration applied to the metal surfaces.

Authentic British sterling silver bears a complete set of hallmarks, including the lion passant mark for silver purity, a town mark indicating the assay office, a date letter, and a registered makers mark.

These decorative vanity pieces are best displayed on a bedroom dressing table, inside a glass cloche, or arranged on a marble vanity tray along with other vintage toilet service items.

Silver components should be gently wiped with a soft microfibre cloth or silver-polishing cloth, avoiding abrasive creams near the delicate original leather or fabric pad to prevent discolouration and deterioration.
