A Desirable Set of 5 Silver Hester Bateman Teaspoons

18th century
Description

A rare set of five silver teaspoons by the great Hester Bateman These lovely Georgian examples are in Hanverian pattern and are bottom marked (hallmarks close to the back of the bowl - pre 1781.)

To the backs there is the Maker's mark and the Sterling Lion. No date letter or Town mark, in keeping the early marks on teaspoons. To the top back of the shank are three marriage initials H above W E

Certain spoons are getting scarce nowadays, due to the great losses caused by the unscrupulous melting of antique silver for scrap and sadly, flatware is one of it's biggest victims. A set of five from a sought after Maker is a good find for the collector. Dimensions below.

This set of five sterling silver teaspoons originates from the Georgian period in the 18th century, attributed to the maker Hester Bateman. The pieces exhibit a bright silver colour with a polished metallic finish, featuring plain handles in the Old English pattern, oval bowls, and hallmarked stems bearing the maker's mark and the Sterling Lion. Visible details include marriage initials "H" above "W E" on the top back of the shanks, bottom-marked hallmarks near the back of the bowls, and minor surface blemishes reflecting age and use. Measuring 12.5 cm high, 2.5 cm wide, and 1 cm deep, these spoons are suited for placement on a sideboard top in a dining room or living space within an English country house interior for display or service.

Georgian sterling silver flatware refers to items crafted in Great Britain between 1714 and 1830. The era is distinguished by fine hand-forged craftsmanship, elegant simplicity, and functional forms like the Old English and Fiddle patterns.

English flatware of this period was predominantly forged from sterling silver, containing 92.5 percent pure silver alloyed with copper for structural durability. Pieces were marked by British assay offices to verify purity.

Authentic pieces bear official British hallmarks, including the lion passant mark for sterling silver, a monarchs head duty mark, a town mark, a date letter, and a distinct makers mark stamped into the stem or handle.

Antique silver teaspoons can be integrated into daily tea services or displayed inside a glass-fronted cabinet alongside contemporary ceramic tableware to add historical contrast to modern table settings.

Hand wash antique silver in warm soapy water using a soft cloth, avoiding abrasive sponges and dishwashers. Apply a non-abrasive silver cream occasionally to remove oxidisation and store in anti-tarnish cloth bags.
