Victorian Antique Silver and Agate Brooch, Scottish C.1860

19th century
Description

An incredibly beautiful and rare Scottish agate and silver antique brooch. Made in Scotland, probably Edinburgh, around 1860. It has 42 hand cut matching agates ( moss, lace or Montrose, bloodstone and carnelians). It has a typical Victorian “C” clasp and long pin. There is very intricate engraving on the total top of the brooch. Because of the variation of agate colours it will go with virtually any colour of jacket. A very collectable piece of Scottish agate jewellery.

Popularised during Queen Victorias visits to Balmoral Castle in the mid-19th century, Scottish pebble brooches are traditional items of jewellery crafted from native Scottish hardstones and silver. They often feature intricate geometric, starburst, or Celtic revival patterns inlaid with jasper, agate, and carnelian.

These pieces typically feature sterling silver or low-grade silver settings hand-engraved with floral or geometric motifs. The settings house carefully cut and polished native hardstones, including bloodstone, red jasper, cairngorm quartz, and varied colourful agates.

Authentic Victorian examples feature hand-cut stone inlays fitted closely into hand-engraved silver mounts, often with closed-back settings. Look for Victorian-style C-clasps with long hinge pins that extend past the body of the brooch, as well as period-appropriate hand-engraving rather than modern machine stamping.

An antique silver brooch can be pinned to the lapel of a tailored blazer, fastened onto a silk scarf, or attached to a winter coat for a touch of historical detail. Alternatively, brooches can be displayed inside velvet-lined shadow boxes or small glass vitrines as decorative accent pieces.

Clean hardstone and silver brooches gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove oils and tarnish. Avoid submerging the piece in water or using harsh chemical jewellers dips, as moisture can weaken the cement holding the stones or damage closed-back settings.
