Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

An antique oil lantern is a portable or wall-mounted lighting fixture designed to house an oil burner and glass chimney within a protective metal frame and glass casing. Widely used throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, these fixtures provided illuminated safety for carriages, hallways, and exterior entryways prior to widespread electrification.

Antique lanterns were typically constructed from durable metals such as brass, copper, sheet iron, or tinplate to withstand heat and weather elements. They feature clear glass side panels, a removable oil reservoir with a cotton wick mechanism, a glass chimney, and a vented smoke cowl at the top.

Authentic 19th-century lanterns often display natural surface patination, hand-soldered brass or copper joints, and rolled metal edges. Look for period-correct features such as an integrated internal reflector, original wick-advancing wheels, blown-glass chimneys with minor inclusions, and subtle hand-crafted unevenness in the casing.

An antique brass lantern functions effectively on a hallway console table, a mantelpiece, or within a disused fireplace alcove to introduce historical character. Pairing the warm metal finish with natural timber, stone hearths, or neutral plaster walls creates a balanced interior arrangement.

Maintain the metal casing by dusting with a dry, soft microfibre cloth while avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners that remove original patination. Glass panels can be wiped clean with a mild soap solution, and residual oil should be fully drained from the burner mechanism when stored.
