This Georgian table caster originates from the late 18th century, taking the form of a clear glass vessel with silver mounts. The body consists of clear cut glass with a diamond-cut pattern and bevelling along the bottom edge, paired with a silver-banded collar bearing a ropetwist border. A pierced silver cap sits atop the neck, decorated with shaped piercing, engraved details, and topped by a small urn finial. Hallmarks appear on the silver collar. Measuring 17.5 cm high, 6 cm wide, and 6 cm deep, the caster is compact for domestic placement. Originally designed for pepper, the piece works well today as a sugar caster upon a sideboard top within an English Country House interior setting.

Originating in the late 17th century and widely produced throughout the Georgian era, sugar casters were designed for table use to sprinkle caster sugar over fruit or desserts. They typically feature a glass or silver body paired with a perforated screw or pull-off top to distribute ground sugar evenly.

Georgian casters were primarily crafted from solid sterling silver or a combination of hand-blown, lead-cut glass paired with hallmarked sterling silver caps. Silver plate and Sheffield plate were also utilized in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Authentic pieces generally display period silver hallmarks, including the monarchs head, makers mark, purity mark, and date letter, often stamped on the collar or rim of the cap. Hand-cut glass from the era displays slight irregularities, sharp facet geometry, and signs of wear on the base.

Antique casters function well as decorative accents when displayed on sideboards, open shelving, or dressing tables. They can also serve as functional vessels for spices, specialty sugars, or bath salts in contemporary settings.

The glass body should be washed gently by hand in lukewarm water with mild liquid soap using a soft brush for cut facets. Silver components should be polished periodically with a non-abrasive silver cloth to prevent tarnish and avoid dipping solutions that can remove delicate surface details.
