Four Silver Animal Menu Holders by A. Wilcox, Chester, 1937-38

1920 - 1940
Description

A set of four very fine silver menu holders in the form of animals, each fully hallmarked for A. Wilcox, Chester, 1937-38. Retailed by Wilson & Sharp Ltd, Edinburgh. Contained within their original box.

Each menu holder depicts a different animal, namely a stag, horse, dog and hare. Each menu holder remains in an excellent, almost untouched condition. The original box is in a very good condition indeed. There is a very slight 'smile' when closed, but the clasp still clicks shut as it should, the exterior is clean and the interior lining remains impeccable.

A fine set.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Silver menu holders became popular during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras as formal dining evolved towards service a la russe, where menus and guest seating arrangements were displayed individualised at each setting or along the table.

Pieces from this period were crafted from sterling silver (925 purity) and stamped with official British assay office hallmarks, including the town mark, lion passant, year letter, and makers initials.

Authentic items bear the three-wheat-sheaves and dagger assay mark for Chester, alongside the specific year letter for 1937 or 1938 and the registered makers mark, such as Arthur Wilcox.

These pieces can be integrated into modern dinner table settings to hold place cards, display small printed menu cards, or serve as decorative accent pieces on a sideboard or console.

Clean silver components using a non-abrasive silver polishing cloth, avoiding chemical dips that can strip delicate detail or artificial patination, and store them within a velvet-lined case to prevent tarnish.
