We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A secretaire bookcase is a dual-purpose piece of furniture combining an upper glazed cabinet for book storage with a lower chest or cupboard featuring a fold-out or pull-out writing desk. Popularised in the 18th and 19th centuries, these pieces provided a compact solution for personal correspondence and home library display.

These cabinets were typically crafted from solid mahogany and decorated with rich flame mahogany veneers. Construction methods often included hand-cut dovetail joints on internal drawers, glazed astragal door panels, and fitted interiors featuring small drawers, pigeonholes, and leather writing surfaces.

Authentic pieces generally display signs of traditional craftsmanship, such as hand-sawn drawer linings, original brass hardware, and natural shrinkage cracks or patination in the timber. Glazing bars should hold individual glass panes rather than a single modern sheet overlay.

Anchor the large footprint of a mahogany bookcase against a primary feature wall, balancing its dark tones with neutral paint colours or contemporary artwork nearby. Curate the glass cabinets with a mix of vintage volumes, ceramic vessels, and minimalist decorative objects to modernise the overall aesthetic.

Dust regularly using a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year to nourish the wood and preserve its patina. Keep the furniture away from direct sunlight, radiators, and extreme changes in humidity to prevent warping or cracking of the timber veneers.
