This Art Deco brooch takes the form of a butterfly fashioned from sterling silver and detailed with translucent green, turquoise, and blue guilloche enamel across the wings and body, alongside red accents within the enamel eye motifs. Pierced antennae arch backwards from the head above a hinged pin fastening and a traditional C-shaped catch secured to the hallmarked silver gilt reverse. The body displays linear fluting and engine-turned texturing beneath the vitreous enamel coating, while the scalloped wing edges follow realistic insect contours. Measuring 6.5 cm across the top wing span, the piece sits neatly on lapels, collars, or scarves as a decorative fastening. It suits everyday wear on structured jackets and knitwear or evening attire within contemporary domestic settings, functioning as an accessible collectible item of period costume jewellery.

Guilloche enamelling gained prominence in Scandinavia during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with celebrated silversmiths in Norway and Denmark developing techniques to fuse translucent enamel over mechanically engraved silver. Dragonfly and butterfly motifs became popular during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods, symbolizing nature and technical precision.

Pieces from this era typically feature high-grade sterling silver, often gold-gilded (vermeil), combined with vitreous glass enamel. The metallic ground is mechanically engraved with geometric or engine-turned patterns before translucent coloured glass enamel is applied and fired.

Authentic items feature makers marks and silver purity hallmarks (such as 925S or 830S) stamped on the reverse. The enamelling will show clear, radiant engine-turned lines beneath the glass surface without cloudy resin or modern plastic substitutes.

These pieces can be worn on coat lapels, silk scarves, or hats to add a pop of colour to contemporary attire. When not in use, collectors often present them mounted inside velvet-lined shadow box frames as decorative wall art.

Enamel should be wiped gently with a soft, lint-free cloth and kept away from water, steam, and chemical cleaners, which can cause micro-cracks or tarnish the underlying silver. Store the brooch flat in a dry environment to avoid impact with other jewellery.
