This nineteenth-century Chippendale revival footstool is made from dark brown oak with an upholstered red fabric top decorated with gold embroidery in a wreath and bee pattern. The frieze displays relief carving of foliage and flowers, and the piece stands on cabriole legs with hairy paw feet. The drop-in seat is newly reupholstered in a quality brocade, and the timber shows a natural dark wood finish. Measuring 50 cm by 40 cm by 45 cm, this footstool functions practically as a seat or rest in an English country house setting. It suits placement by a fireplace hearth or in a living room as a decorative occasional piece.

Originating in the 18th century from cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale, the style blends Rococo, Gothic, and Chinese influences, prominently featuring cabriole legs, detailed relief carving, and claw feet.

Dense hardwoods such as mahogany and oak were predominantly used for the structural framework to accommodate deep carving, paired with woven silk, velvet, or damask textiles for the upholstery.

Authentic period revival pieces display hand-carving marks, traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, natural timber oxidation on the underside, and minor wear consistent with age around the feet and joints.

Positioning a period carved stool alongside contemporary upholstery creates a balanced contrast, utilizing the detailed timber frame as a focal point of visual texture.

Timber surfaces require regular dusting with a soft dry cloth and periodic application of beeswax, while textile seats should be kept out of direct sunlight and gently vacuumed with a soft brush attachment.
