During the 1920s and 1930s, prohibition and the rise of cocktail culture led to a demand for inventive barware. Manufacturers produced novelty shakers shaped like everyday objects, such as bells, lanterns, and traffic lights, combining utility with playful design.

High-grade pieces from this period were typically constructed from nickel silver electroplated with a layer of pure silver, often stamped EPNS. Internal elements featured fitted strainers and removable caps to manage pour flow and prevent leakage.

Authentic examples feature stamped makers marks, registration numbers, or patent marks on the base or inner rim. Original pieces display period-appropriate wear to the silver plating and tight-fitting friction or screw joints.

Display the item on a tray on a sideboard top, bar cart, or open shelving alongside vintage decanters and glassware. It functions as both a decorative metalwork sculpture and practical barware.

Hand wash with warm water and mild liquid soap, avoiding abrasive pads or chemical detergents that strip thin silver layers. Apply specialized silver polish with a soft cloth to remove oxidisation and restore shine.
