This early 19th-century French provincial silver wine taster, or tastevin, originates from the 19th century in a French Provincial style. Fashioned from silver with a reflective silver finish, the shallow circular vessel includes a loop ring handle, exterior engraved lettering, vertical gadrooning along the lower body, and rows of dot punchwork decoration encircling the rim and base. Hallmarks appear on both the base and side, alongside partially erased maker marks on the handle. The piece measures 2.5 cm high, 7.5 cm wide, and 10 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this item serves as a decorative accessory displayed on a sideboard top. Collectors of wine accessories utilize such silver pieces as display items or small tabletop vessels in living areas and dining rooms.

A tastevin is a shallow silver cup historically used by winemakers and sommeliers to examine the colour, clarity, and aroma of wine inside dim wine cellars.

Historically, wine tasters were crafted from solid silver or pewter, featuring repousse indents and fluted gadrooning designed to reflect candle light through liquid.

Authentic 19th-century French silver tastevins typically display official silver hallmark stamps, regional assay marks, hand-punched ornamentation, and maker initials near the rim or handle.

An antique silver wine taster serves as a decorative tabletop object on a home bar, an accent on a sideboard tray, or a functional catchall dish for small desktop accessories.

Clean gently using a soft cotton cloth and specialised silver polish, avoiding harsh chemicals or abrasive cloths that could strip natural oxidisation from deep grooves.
