A Pendant Necklace Made from Malachite Silver and Enamel Circa 1950

1940 - 1960
Description

This very high quality silver jewel dates to circa 1950. It is continental in its manufacture, most likely Italian.

The large central polished green stone is a wonderful cabochon of malachite with intricate natural graining.

This impressive stone is set into a fine quality heavy silver mount with a raised flower head at the top and bottom, with shaped petals enhanced with green enamel. Trailing from the lower flower is a stem set with three different coloured gems and terminating with an intricately engraved silver leaf.

The reverse of this stunning piece of jewellery is almost as impressive as the front, with a cast and engraved stem with a central flower and leaves.

At the top of the reverse of the pendant is a substantial shaped loop for hanging and displaying on a chain. The loop is marked 925 silver and has an indistinct maker's mark.

The pendant comes with its original chain, which has two flower heads decorated with black enamel, which would display on the wearer's neck.

The chain is fitted with a spring loaded clasp for fastening, which works well.

A most striking statement jewel from circa 1950.

This mid-century modern pendant necklace dates to circa 1950 and has a continental origin. The piece consists of a large oval green malachite cabochon with natural graining, secured in a heavy silver mount. The frame includes raised enamel floral accents in shades of green, trailing stems set with multicoloured gemstones, and engraved silver leaf motifs. The piece hangs from a silver chain measuring 70 cm in length, while the pendant itself measures 4.5 cm high, 2.8 cm wide, and 1 cm deep. The construction incorporates a prong setting, a spring-loaded clasp, and a marked 925 silver loop with an indistinct maker's mark on the reverse. Worn as a personal accessory, this statement jewellery item suits modern outfits or formal evening attire, adding a distinctive mid-century aesthetic to a wardrobe.

During the mid-20th century, lapidary jewellery featuring vibrant semi-precious stones like malachite gained popularity. Designers frequently paired the distinctive green banded copper carbonate mineral with silver mountings and decorative enamel accents.

Pendants from this era typically feature natural cut malachite cabochons set within sterling silver mounts. Decorative elements often incorporate cold enamel or vitreous enamel detailing alongside accent gemstones.

Authentic pieces exhibit characteristic concentric or parallel green banding unique to natural malachite. Look for silver hallmarks or purity stamps on the reverse or near the clasp, alongside hand-applied enamel work.

A malachite pendant serves as a focal accessory when paired with neutral textiles such as linen or wool. It can be layered with plain silver chains or worn singularly against a dark backdrop to emphasize the green hues.

Malachite is a soft mineral sensitive to acids, heat, and ultrasonic cleaners. Clean gentle areas using a soft damp cloth, polish the silver mount with a dedicated microfiber silver cloth, and store the piece separately from harder gemstones.
