Small Georgian Mahogany Bureau Bookcase

18th century
Description

A Very Attractive Mid 18th Century, Georgian Mahogany Bureau Bookcase Of Very Attractive, Rare, Small Proportions, With Dental Cornice Above Shaped Mirror Door Within Gilded Slip, Over Well Figured Flap And Three Long Drawers With Original Brass Handles, Raised On Original Shaped Bracket Feet.

A great example of its type this bureau bookcase retains a good colour and patina and it has been constructed using very good quality mahogany. The incredibly small size and proportion is extremely rare and of course means that it is certainly small enough to fit just about any space or spot that one can imagine.

The mirror plate within the door almost ceratinly isn’t original, but is old and has been in situ for a reasonable amount of time, therefore it has aged accordingly in terms of marks, scuffs and scrapes.

It also boasts original brass handles and original bracket feet and we think that the shaped panel which encloses the mirror plate is a particularly elegant and classy touch.

As with all the items which we offer for sale this bureau bookcase has been attended to by our highly skilled, traditional antique furniture restorers before being advertised, meaning that it is ready to be placed straight into the home or office.

This mid 18th-century Georgian bureau bookcase is constructed from warm brown mahogany with brass hardware and glass. The upper section comprises a dentil cornice above a single door with a shaped mirror frame enclosing a mirror plate within a gilded slip. Below sits a slant-front writing flap with an escutcheon, concealing an internal desk space, resting over three long graduated lower drawers fitted with original brass drop handles and backplates. The piece is raised on original shaped bracket feet. Visible details include figuration in the timber grain, moulding along the cornice, keyholes on the fall front and drawer fronts, and aged marks on the mirror glass. It measures 192 cm high, 66 cm wide, and 48 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this compact bureau bookcase suits placement in a study, living room, or hallway as a combination writing desk and display cabinet. The modest proportions allow it to fit comfortably into smaller rooms while providing practical workspace and storage behind the fall-front desk and lower drawers.

A Georgian bureau bookcase typically combines a slant-front writing desk with an upper cabinet section, designed during the 18th century to offer both writing space and secure storage.

Cabinet makers during the Georgian period predominantly utilised mahogany, oak, and walnut, employing hand-dovetailed joinery and cast brass handles.

Authentic Georgian furniture displays signs of handcraftsmanship, such as hand-cut dovetail joints, uneven drawer linings, period-appropriate brass fittings, and natural wood shrinkage.

Positioning a bureau bookcase in a living room, hallway, or home office provides a functional work area while serving as a vertical focal point for displaying ceramics or literature.

Maintain mahogany by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth, keeping the item away from direct heat sources, and applying beeswax polish once or twice a year.
