This Victorian side cabinet dates to circa 1890 and is constructed from mahogany with warm brown tones, enhanced by contrasting satinwood inlay and a central oval marquetry medallion on the drop-front door. The upper tier incorporates a small mirrored back panel beneath a stepped wooden gallery moulding, while a curved brass bail handle is fitted to the front. Standing at 96 cm high, 40 cm wide, and 38 cm deep, the unit rests upon shaped feet at the base corners. Originally designed as a coal shuttle with a metal-lined interior, this traditional English Country House piece suits placement in a fireplace alcove as a functional side cabinet or decorative display stand. The timber displays a polished finish with lighter wood banding framing the door panel, and the structure is presented ready for daily interior use in a modern living space or hallway.

A coal purdonium is a decorative wooden cabinet introduced in the nineteenth century to store coal for domestic fireplaces while concealing the fuel behind a finished timber frontage.

These cabinets were predominantly crafted from hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, often featuring brass drop handles, zinc or iron removable liners, and decorative satinwood marquetry inlays.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-joined dovetail cabinetwork, original metal interior bucket liners, naturally aged brass hardware, and a drop-front mechanism designed to reveal the coal compartment.

While originally intended for fuel storage, these compact cabinets can be positioned beside a hearth or sofa to serve as an accent table, side cabinet, or hidden storage for modern household items.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a soft cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically along the grain to protect the original patina and wood finish.
