This Georgian Old Sheffield plate sugar vase originates from circa 1800. Formed as a large wirework vessel with a silver finish, it presents a curved pedestal base, an arched reeded swing handle, and looped wire construction enclosing a clear glass liner. The piece shows copper telegraphing through the silver surface in places. It measures 20 cm high, 10 cm wide, and 10 cm deep. Positioned on a dining room sideboard top or a living room console table, the vase holds small items or stands as a decorative display piece. The open wirework structure allows light to pass through the glass liner while maintaining its traditional shape. The structured pedestal base elevates the body securely above the surface below.

Old Sheffield Plate refers to a process discovered in the 18th century where a layer of sterling silver was fused onto copper ingots before being rolled into sheets. Wirework pieces were crafted by drawing this fused metal into thin wires and hand-forming them into delicate decorative forms such as sugar baskets and sweetmeat dishes.

Georgian sugar vases were predominantly manufactured from sterling silver or fused Old Sheffield Plate, combining a copper core with silver cladding. These pieces frequently included hand-drawn wirework and solid cast elements such as pedestal feet and swing handles.

Authentic Old Sheffield Plate often exhibits areas where the copper core shows through the silver layer due to historic polishing, a phenomenon known as bleeding. Additionally, look for folded wire edges, seamless joins, and an absence of electroplating marks typical of later 19th-century reproductions.

A Georgian wirework sugar basket serves as a refined decorative vessel on a sideboard top, dining table, or mantelpiece. It can be displayed as an standalone architectural accent or paired with period glassware and contemporary table linens.

Care should be taken to clean Old Sheffield Plate with non-abrasive silver polishes and soft microfibre cloths to avoid wearing through the thin silver layer. Dust wirework gently with a soft brush and store the item in a dry environment to prevent rapid oxidisation.
