This nineteenth-century antique majolica table lamp follows the Renaissance Revival style, combining hand-painted earthenware with a cast gilt metal base and a fabric shade. The white porcelain body displays classical Italian-style decoration in a multicoloured majolica palette featuring winged mythical creatures and grotesque figures. The base rests on ornate brass claw feet with elaborate mouldings, while the top holds a pleated ikat fabric shade decorated in shades of pink, yellow, and blue. The lamp measures 60 cm high, 44 cm wide, and 20 cm deep overall. This table lamp sits well on a sideboard top in an English Country House interior setting, bringing decorative light and colour to a living room, hallway, or study.

Majolica is a type of earthenware pottery coated with an opaque white tin glaze and decorated with colourful metal oxide pigments. Developed during the Renaissance and revived extensively in the nineteenth century, it is characterised by vibrant glazes and intricate hand-painted designs.

These lamps feature a tin-glazed earthenware body painted with mineral-based glazes, often mounted on brass or gilt-bronze bases for stability. Electrical fittings and fabric lamp shades are added or updated over time.

Authentic Victorian or Renaissance Revival majolica exhibits fine crazing in the glaze, weight consistent with heavy earthenware, and hand-painted variations in decoration. Look for makers marks or impressed numbers on the underside of the ceramic base, beneath metal mounts.

Position the lamp on a sideboard, console table, or bedside cabinet to serve as a focal point. Pair it with neutral surrounding textures or bold patterned textiles, like ikat shades, to complement its historical artwork.

Wipe the ceramic body gently with a dry or slightly damp microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemicals that might compromise the glaze. Ensure electrical wiring is tested by a qualified electrician and kept away from moisture.
