FAQs

Vinaigrettes were small, ornate containers used primarily during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to hold a sponge soaked in scented vinegar or perfume to ward off unpleasant odours.

These items were predominantly constructed from sterling silver, frequently featuring a gilt-washed interior and a delicate hand-pierced floral or geometric grille to protect the soaked sponge inside.

Authentic Georgian pieces bear British hallmarks stamped inside the lid or base, indicating the silver purity, assay office location, maker mark, and date letter.

Small silver collectables can be styled on a curated tray, placed atop a stack of books on a side table, or arranged within a glass display cabinet to add subtle historic detail.

Gently wipe the exterior with a soft silver-polishing cloth to remove tarnish, avoiding abrasive chemicals or immersing gilded grilles in liquid cleaners to prevent deterioration.
