This novelty match striker and holder dates from the late Victorian period around 1900. Constructed in clear glass and sterling silver, the piece takes the form of a slouched riding boot with a textured strike band on the cuff, minor nibbling to the base of the glass foot, and polish wear with a loss to the maker's mark on the silver mount. The dimensions measure 7 cm high, 6.5 cm wide, and 3.5 cm deep. Placed on a mantelpiece in a gentleman's library or study, the design functions as both a decorative accessory and a practical desk companion. The clear glass body reveals moulded creases along the leg of the boot alongside a polished silver collar rim at the top opening.

An antique match striker is a tabletop accessory popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries designed to store and ignite friction matches, known as strike-anywhere matches. Often produced in novelty forms such as boots or barrels, these items combined utilitarian function with decorative desk appeal.

Victorian match strikers were commonly crafted from heavy moulded glass, ribbed ceramic strike-ware, porcelain, or cast metal. Many quality examples featured hallmarked sterling silver or electroplated nickel silver collars fitted around the rim to protect the opening.

Authentic late Victorian pieces feature silver mounts stamped with official British hallmarks, including the maker mark, assay office mark, standard mark, and date letter. The glass body usually displays signs of light wear to the base alongside an integral textured or ground surface intended for match striking.

A glass match striker functions as a practical accent when placed on a fireplace mantelpiece alongside candles or positioned within a desk tray arrangement. Its compact proportions also make it suitable for holding matches, toothpicks, or small personal items.

Clean the glass body using warm water and mild liquid soap, taking care not to rub abrasive sponges on textured strike bands. Silver rims should be buffed gently with a dedicated silver polishing cloth to avoid residue settling into frosted glass grooves.
