A pair of Edwardian sterling silver menu and place card holders, dating from 1900 and hallmarked in Sheffield for 1906 by Martin Hall & Co, presents a classical mother and child scene with a cherub motif and a section at the rear to hold the card. The solid sterling silver objects have a bright metallic silver colour and a highly reflective polished finish, resting upon plain oval disc bases stamped with clear hallmark hallmarks. Each piece measures 3.4 cm in height, with a base length of 3.4 cm and a base width of 2 cm, weighing 16 grams in total. These decorative items suit placement on a dining table centre during formal dinners, operating as functional accessories for holding place cards or menus while adding a traditional English country house touch to home hospitality settings.

Popularised in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, silver menu and place card holders were designed to display individual guest names or formal dinner menus on fine dining tables.

These pieces were typically cast or struck in sterling silver, featuring loaded or flat disc bases for stability, often showcasing classical imagery or motif work.

Authentic British pieces feature official hallmarks, including the lion passant for sterling quality, an assay office symbol, a date letter, and a makers mark stamped into the silver surface.

They can be integrated into contemporary tablescapes for formal dinner parties, used to hold place cards, display cheese varieties on a buffet, or hold small artwork and photographs.

Wipe gently with a soft silver polishing cloth to remove tarnish, avoiding abrasive polishes or immersion in chemical dips that can damage delicate chased details or circular bases.
