This Georgian period sterling silver and silver gilt vinaigrette takes an octagonal shape with a hinged top and measures 2.5 cm x 1.8 cm x 0.7 cm, weighing 5.2 grams. The photograph shows a plain exterior body with visible surface wear, alongside an open lid revealing a bright gilded interior finish and a removable pierced grille punctured with numerous small circular holes. A maker's stamp marked JW is visible inside the lid, accompanied by clear internal hallmarks. The small box exhibits minimal overall wear commensurate with age and use, and displays no monograms or engraved initials. Today, this piece serves as a compact decorative antique accessory suitable for display on a bookshelf, desk or display cabinet within a home. It provides a tactile example of early nineteenth-century Birmingham silversmithing, combining functional portability with intricate internal metalwork. Collectors of small Georgian silver objects can place it safely on open shelving or within a curated cabinet to highlight its historic craftsmanship and distinct multi-faceted geometric form.

A silver vinaigrette is a small hinged container featuring an internal perforated grille designed to hold a sponge soaked in aromatic vinegar or perfume, popular during the 18th and 19th centuries to mask foul city odours.

The interior surfaces were lined with gold gilding, known as silver-gilt, to prevent the acidic vinegars and essential oils from corroding or tarnishing the sterling silver metal structure.

Authentic items bear full British hallmark impressions, including a makers mark, the sovereigns head duty mark, a lion passant indicating sterling silver, a city assay mark, and a specific date letter.

These small decorative objects are ideal for styling inside glass vitrines, atop stacks of art books on a sideboard, or as part of a curated tray of curiosities on a desk.

Maintain the exterior using a soft, non-abrasive silver polishing cloth, while gently dusting the gilded interior to protect the delicate layer of gold from wearing away.
