This Danish sterling silver brooch, designated as design number 158, dates from the 1950 period and exhibits the Skonvirke style. The piece comprises a polished central silver cabochon enclosed within an openwork foliate border, decorated with beaded silver accents at the cardinal points. The silver surface presents a reflective metallic finish in a consistent silver colour, showing smooth curved edges on the leaf scrolls and small round spheres on the beaded elements. The physical dimensions measure 4.7 cm by 3.7 cm. In a contemporary home, an accessory of this type serves as a wearable item of jewellery for personal adornment on garments. The construction incorporates a secure fastening mechanism to the reverse for attachment to clothing fabrics. The sterling silver composition provides durability for regular wear, while the traditional Scandinavian design motifs integrate with vintage or modern attire.

Sknvirke is the Scandinavian counterpart to Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts movement, originating in Denmark during the early twentieth century. It emphasizes handcrafted silver construction, organic forms, and naturalistic motifs such as leaves, berries, and scrolling lines.

Classic Danish brooches were typically crafted from sterling silver or 830-grade silver. Designs frequently feature hand-hammered finishes, oxidized recesses, beaded accents, and central polished silver cabochons or native gemstones.

Authentic pieces carry distinct makers marks, including variations of the Georg Jensen hallmark, silver purity stamps such as 925S or 830S, and specific numerical design reference numbers stamped on the reverse.

A silver brooch can be pinned to the lapel of a tailored blazer, used to secure a silk scarf, or attached to a coat, handbag, or knitwear collar to provide a focal point.

Sterling silver should be wiped gently with a soft polishing cloth formulated for silver. Avoid harsh liquid dips or ultrasonic cleaners, as these can strip intentional oxidised detail from recessed areas.
