Antique Exceptional 18th Century George I Figured Walnut Bureau Bookcase Secretaire Cabinet

18th century
Description

A superb and highly important antique George I figured walnut bureau bookcase dating to the early 18th century, circa 1720. A rare and very strong example of the period, particularly for its beautifully figured walnut and the survival of so many original features.

The timber throughout is of outstanding quality with richly figured walnut veneers showing exceptional movement and depth. The colour and patina are quite simply outstanding with a richness and warmth that only develops over centuries, giving the piece immediate presence.

The upper section features mirrored doors retaining their original mirror plates, a rare and highly desirable feature. These enclose adjustable shelving, combining display and practical storage. Below, the fall front opens to a finely fitted interior with a central cupboard, drawers and pigeonholes. It also retains its original candle slides, designed to be pulled out to hold a candle while writing, a practical and increasingly scarce feature that adds to both authenticity and charm. These pieces were made as compact writing cabinets allowing letters, documents and writing instruments to be organised and secured, effectively serving as an early form of a home office.

The lower section provides further cupboard storage and stands on its original bracket feet, another important point of originality that is increasingly uncommon to find. The original handles also remain in place adding further to the authenticity and appeal of the piece.

The proportions are particularly elegant giving height and presence without heaviness, making it both a statement piece and highly usable within an interior.

A rare early 18th century example of English cabinet making from the George I period when walnut was at its height before the widespread use of mahogany. Pieces of this quality retaining original mirrors, handles, feet and candle slides are becoming increasingly difficult to source, especially with such exceptional colour.

Condition report

In very good antique condition with expected age related wear. The colour and patina are outstanding throughout. The original mirror plates, handles, feet and candle slides are all present. The piece is structurally sound and the interior is clean and fully usable.

This George I bureau bookcase is an 18th-century piece formed from warm brown figured walnut, glass and brass. The upper section contains two arched mirrored doors, while the middle incorporates a slant-front fall enclosing a fitted interior above pull-out candle slides. The lower chest section comprises two short drawers over two long drawers, fitted with brass drop handles and escutcheons, all raised on bracket feet. The timber displays visible grain patterns and deep patination across the flat cornices, panelled fall front and drawer fronts. The entire cabinet measures 198 cm high, 103 cm wide and 59 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this dual-purpose item serves as both a display cabinet and a traditional writing desk. The upper mirrored doors allow books or decorative items to be showcased, while the drop-down slope provides a functional writing surface with internal compartments for stationery. The multiple lower drawers offer practical enclosed storage for household paperwork, making it suitable for placement in a study, library or living room where traditional period character and workspace organisation are desired.

Emerging in the early 18th century, a George I bureau bookcase combines a slant-front writing desk, lower storage drawers, and an upper cabinet often fitted with mirrored or glazed doors. These multifunctional pieces served as the central administrative hub in historic homes.

English furniture of this era prominently featured figured walnut, burr walnut veneers, and feather-banding or crossbanding inlays. Secondary timbers like oak or pine were used for drawer linings, complemented by hand-cast brass drop handles and escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces show construction details such as hand-cut dovetailed joints, oak drawer linings, original mercury-backed mirror plate patination, and natural timber shrinkage. Candle slides situated beneath the upper cabinet doors are also characteristic of the period.

A George I walnut bureau functions as a architectural statement piece in a study, hallway, or living space. Combining warm, patinated timber with contemporary upholstery, simple artwork, or neutral wall colours creates a balanced design.

Maintain the timber finish by keeping the cabinet away from direct sunlight, central heating vents, and damp conditions. Regular dusting with a dry, soft cloth and occasional application of natural beeswax will preserve the original patination and veneers.
