FAQs

Georgian bookcases are defined by classical architectural proportions, symmetry, and meticulous woodwork. Popular between 1714 and 1837, these pieces frequently feature Cuban or West Indian mahogany, glazed upper doors with geometric glazing bars, classical friezes, and bracket feet.

Eighteenth-century bookcases were primarily constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers applied to secondary woods like pine or oak. Glazed sections used hand-blown cylinder glass, while decorative fittings were typically cast from brass or iron.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of period craftsmanship, including hand-sawn drawer joinery, irregular thickness in cylinder glass panes, and secondary timber showing hand-plane marks. Original locks, brassware, and age-related oxidation on raw wood surfaces further indicate genuine period origin.

A classic mahogany bookcase offers a grounding focal point in contemporary spaces when paired with modern artwork or minimalist upholstery. Placing modern ceramics, glassware, or curated books behind the glazed doors creates an engaging contrast between historical timber and modern design elements.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight, radiators, and air conditioning vents to prevent drying and movement. Maintain the finish by applying a thin layer of natural beeswax polish once or twice a year, buffing gently along the grain with a soft cotton cloth.
