Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Dutch Rococo style bureau from the 18th century consists of a warm brown mahogany body ornamented with intricate fruitwood floral marquetry inlay across the slant-front fall and the three lower oak-lined drawers. The piece exhibits a curved bombe shape supported by carved claw feet, and incorporates ornate brass drop handles on the drawers alongside brass drop pulls on the sides of the fall. The slant-front fall opens to a fitted interior containing drawers, pigeon holes, a door, and a well, while the exterior displays delicate light wood floral and ribbon garlands. Measuring 112 cm high, 120 cm wide, and 60 cm deep with a fall height of 80.5 cm, this bureau serves as a practical writing desk and storage cabinet in a gentleman's library or study. The storage drawers accommodate stationery, papers, and small personal items, while the drop-down writing surface provides a dedicated workspace.

FAQs

A bombe bureau features a convex, outward-swelling lower body combined with intricate wood inlay known as marquetry, popularised in 18th-century European cabinetmaking.

These bureaux were typically constructed using timber frameworks overlaid with fine mahogany veneers, featuring hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, cast brass handles, and contrasting fruitwood floral inlays.

Authentic period pieces display evidence of hand-planing, slightly irregular hand-cut dovetails, natural timber shrinkage around the inlay work, and original cast brass hardware showing historical patination.

Position the bureau as a focal statement piece in a study, hallway, or reception room, pairing its rich wood tones with neutral wall palettes to balance the detailed marquetry.

Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer lifting, and maintain the finish by applying a high-quality beeswax polish along the grain.
