This 19th-century Pre-Columbian style talisman pendant comprises carved jadeite stone in mottled shades of green and brown. The artefact takes the form of a mask depicting a stylized human face with closed eyes, a distinct nose, and full lips, surmounted by an elaborate ornamental headdress and framed by carved side elements. Visible details include incised lines on the headdress, a drilled suspension hole near the upper edge, and natural colour variations across the stone surface. Intended as a decorative item, this small sculptural piece is suited for display within a cabinet of curiosities or as part of a collection of historical antiquities in a study or living space.

In Mesoamerican cultures, particularly among the Maya and Olmec, jade was highly prized, often valued above gold, and symbolised life, water, and status. Carved stone head pendants and amulets were crafted to represent deities, rulers, or ancestral figures for protection and ritual use.

These items were traditionally carved from jadeite stone using mineral abrasives like quartz sand, string saws, and wooden or bone hand drills. The material exhibits natural tonal variations, including mottled green, brownish vein inclusions, and ochre highlights.

Authenticity is evaluated by inspecting tool marks under magnification, looking for irregular biconical suspension holes created by hand drilling, and examining natural surface patination. Microscopic wear patterns from historical abrasives differ significantly from modern motorized rotary tools.

The pendant can be strung onto a simple leather thong or precious metal chain as a statement piece of jewellery. Alternatively, it can be mounted on a custom brass or metal display stand to present as a sculptural object in a curio cabinet or on a bookshelf.

Jadeite should be cleaned gently using lukewarm water, mild soap, and a soft cloth or soft-bristled brush. Harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, and sudden temperature fluctuations should be avoided to prevent damage to natural fissures within the mineral structure.
