Georg Jensen. Sterling Silver Box #33 by Harald Nielsen - 1930

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

A stunning early example of Georg Jensen solid sterling silver box, art deco in era. Having both the 1930 London import mark (the date letter "p") and the "GS" sponsor's mark for Stockwell & Co. elevates this piece from a "vintage design" to an important, early-period artifact.

Stockwell & Co. acted as the vital gateway for Georg Jensen into the UK market from 1909 until roughly 1931. Because Harald Nielsen designed the box right around 1930, this piece represents one of the very first production batches ever imported to the UK. It wasn't sitting in a Danish workshop for years; it was sent straight to London,

Collectors of British-market silver highly prize early "GS" imports. Jensen later established their own London corporate branch (using the "G.JLd" stamp). A box stamped with the original Stockwell agent mark during the absolute peak year of the Art Deco movement carries historical cachet that modern post-war copies lack.

A superb example with multiple clear marks, signed Georg Jensen, Denmark , Sterling, 925, GS Sponsor mark for Stockwell & Co., the import mark for London 1930 dating it accurately.

Professionally cleaned and polished in our silversmiths workshop in beautiful condition measuring 3" x 2 1/2" x 3/8" and weighing 2.92 Troy Ounces / 90.7 Grams.

This early 1930 Art Deco decorative box is made from solid sterling silver with a polished reflective finish and a silver colour. Designed by Harald Nielsen, the low-profile rectangular form features a hinged lid, subtle beaded trim along the corners and rim, and a small clasp on the front edge. Hallmarks and sponsor marks appear on the metal. The box measures 1 cm high, 7.6 cm wide, and 635 cm deep. In a home today, this piece works well on an office desk to hold small items such as paperclips or stamps. It also suits a dressing table or a display cabinet as a collector's item.

Danish Art Deco silver from the 1930s is defined by sleek geometric forms, subtle beaded or reeded embellishments, and restrained functional elegance.

Sterling silver consists of 92.5 percent pure silver alloyed with 7.5 percent other metals, usually copper, to enhance durability for daily handling.

Authentic pieces feature official makers marks, silver purity stamps such as 925S or STERLING, and specific design catalogue numbers stamped onto the metal.

Small silver boxes serve as functional accent pieces on coffee tables, office desks, or dressing tables to store small personal accessories.

Clean gently using a soft, lint-free cloth and a specialised non-abrasive silver polish, storing the piece in a dry, low-humidity environment to limit oxidisation.
