Early 20th-century Four-arm Dugdill Lamp

1900 - 1920
Description

Early 20th-Century Four-Arm Dugdill Lamp

A beautifully engineered four-arm lamp by Dugdill, displaying the craftsmanship and attention to detail associated with this respected manufacturer. Fitted with a later milk glass shade, the lamp has been rewired and is ready for use.

From the 1910s, Dugdill lamps illuminated desks, piano stands, living rooms and libraries, bringing their distinctive industrial construction into domestic interiors. Their adjustable arms offered versatile, practical lighting, combining elegant proportions with robust engineering.

By the 1920s, John Dugdill & Co. Ltd. was supplying electrical fittings to factories, public institutions and government departments, including the War Office and the Admiralty. In his later years, John Dugdill devoted himself almost entirely to Dugdill’s Patent: a range of adjustable lighting arms and fittings designed to suit individual requirements.

When Dugdill died in 1929, aged sixty-seven, he was recognised as one of Britain’s most experienced and respected electrical installation contractors. His company continued supplying lamps for industrial and domestic use into the 1940s, before being formally dissolved in 1975.

Although the Dugdill name gradually faded from view, its lamps endured across Britain and beyond. The brand was revived in 2024, beginning a new chapter in its history.

This early 20th-century floor lamp exemplifies industrial style with its four-arm articulated brass construction and heavy circular cast base. The piece integrates iron and glass elements, displaying natural age-related colouration, elements of rust, and added bolts on one of the arm joints. A white frilled glass shade caps the structure, completing a mechanical silhouette defined by multiple hinged segments and cogged joints. The upright stands 152.4 cm high, 15.2 cm wide, and 15.2 cm deep. Placement suits an empty corner in a living room, library, or study where focused, adjustable lighting is needed. The wiring setup uses a new three-cord flex with a power output of 240v UK, making it ready for domestic use while retaining its utilitarian heritage.

Dugdill lamps were patented by John Dugdill in the early 20th century in Britain. Designed specifically for industrial environments, workshops, and drafting offices, these lamps featured multi-directional articulated arms to provide focused task lighting.

Early industrial task lamps were predominantly constructed from cast iron bases, brass or steel tubing, and brass cogged friction joints. Shades were commonly made from glass, painted enamel, or spun steel.

Authentic pieces often feature raised lettering with the makers mark or patent details cast directly into the joint mechanisms or base. They also feature characteristic heavy cogged friction joints held together with tension screws.

An industrial floor lamp functions as functional accent lighting alongside modern seating or reading chairs. The dark patina and metallic finish contrast effectively against neutral walls, plaster finishes, or exposed brickwork.

Dust metal surfaces using a dry microfiber cloth, avoiding abrasive polish that could strip historic patina. Glass shades can be detached and cleaned with warm water and mild soap, while electrical components should be checked and rewired by a qualified electrician.
