Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This rare pair of Victorian satinwood waterfall bookcases exemplifies the Regency style with golden brown timber finishes and crossbanded accents. Each piece includes a brass gallery rail atop tiered open shelves, a single drawer fitted with stamped brass knobs, and a lower panelled cupboard door that opens to an adjustable shelf, all elevated on square tapering legs. Visible details encompass fine wood graining, contrasting dark crossbanding on the doors and drawers, and delicate openwork brass galleries along the top edges. Measuring 130.5 cm high, 48.5 cm wide, and 27 cm deep, these tall, narrow storage units fit seamlessly into traditional living rooms, studies, or libraries to display books and decorative items while concealing smaller accessories within the cupboards. The compact footprint makes them practical for placement in alcoves or narrow spaces throughout the home.

FAQs

A waterfall bookcase is a design where shelves step back in decreasing depth from bottom to top. Originating in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the graduated structure allows larger volumes to sit on lower shelves while keeping the upper section slim.

These pieces were typically constructed using dense hardwoods such as satinwood, mahogany, or rosewood. Features often include brass gallery railings along the top ledge, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, and veneered door panels.

Authentic period furniture displays hand-sawn timber marks, irregular hand-cut dovetails on drawers, and natural oxidisation on the interior surfaces. Stamped maker signatures, such as those from Gillows of Lancaster and London, may also appear on drawer edges or backboards.

A pair of narrow waterfall bookcases can flank a fireplace, door frame, or window alcove to provide vertical symmetry. The combination of open upper shelving and lower cupboard storage allows display space for ceramics alongside concealed storage.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax paste once or twice a year to maintain the timber finish. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to reduce timber movement and uneven fading.
