Stunning William IV Silver Vinaigrette in Book Form Taylor & Perry 1832

Description

This rare antique silver vinaigrette is wonderfully crafted in the shape of a book with beautifully detailed texture including raised ridges along the spine. The interior presents lovely bright gilding inside the lid and base with an ornate foliate pierced design with swirling patterns to the grill.  The lid has crisp geometric engraving surrounding an empty oblong cartouche in the centre.  This pattern is also repeated to the underside.

Fully hallmarked inside under the grill base Taylor & Perry Birmingham 1832 with part hallmarks to the interior of the lid.

Condition:   In great antique collector's condition - the hinge to the grill works well and the outside lid closes well, almost flush but not quite. To the base there is a small mark to the pattern.  

This is a beautiful example of antique novelty silver - ideal gift for a collector of vinaigrettes or interesting antique silver.

Measurements: Length: 4 cm Width:   2.6 cm Depth: 0.7cm   Weight: 22 grams

FAQs

A silver book vinaigrette is a small, decorative 19th-century container designed in the disguise of a miniature volume. It features a hinged cover and an interior perforated grille designed to hold a sponge soaked in perfume or aromatic vinegar.

Vinaigrettes were predominantly crafted from sterling silver or gilded silver (vermeil) to prevent corrosion from acetic acid. Techniques such as engine turning, hand engraving, and intricate piercing were applied to decorate the exterior surfaces and internal grilles.

Authentic pieces carry British hallmarks indicating the silver purity, city mark, date letter, makers initials, and the sovereigns duty mark depicting King William IV. In addition, the internal grille should exhibit period-correct hand-pierced decoration and sound hinge integrity.

Small antique silver objects make excellent decorative accents when displayed inside a glass curiosity cabinet, positioned atop a stack of leather-bound books, or showcased on an office desk or mantelpiece.
