These 19th-century Georgian silver sugar tongs are made of solid sterling silver in a bright silver colour with a polished finish. The piece is formed in a U-shaped bow with plain arms terminating in spoon-shaped grips, and features clear assay hallmarks stamped along the inner curve. Faint surface marks commensurate with age are visible on the metal surface. Measuring 12 cm high and 4 cm wide, the tongs are a practical size for everyday use in a modern home. Today, these sugar tongs suit placement on a sideboard top during afternoon tea service, or alongside a coffee station or tea tray. They function well for serving lump sugar or ice cubes at a dining table or during gatherings. The item brings traditional English country house character to table settings and displays attractively when stored in a silver chest or cabinet between uses.

Sugar tongs are specialised serving implements designed to lift individual sugar cubes or loaves from a sugar bowl during afternoon tea service. Originating in the eighteenth century, they became standard accessories within British sterling silver tea sets.

Most authentic British sugar tongs are constructed from sterling silver, comprising 92.5 percent pure silver alloyed with copper for structural durability. They are typically cast or hand-hammered from a single strip of metal or joined at the central U-shaped bow.

Authentic pieces feature struck British hallmarks stamped along the inner bow or arm, including the town mark for Exeterhistorically represented by a castle with three towersalongside a makers mark, date letter, and lion passant.

These implements can be incorporated into contemporary table settings alongside modern ceramics, displayed on silver trays as part of a dining sideboard arrangement, or styled inside glass-topped collector cabinets.

Maintain sterling silver by polishing gently with a soft microfibre cloth and a specialised silver foam to remove tarnish. Store pieces in anti-tarnish cloth bags or lined drawers away from direct humidity and atmospheric pollutants.
