Chinese Carved Jade Phoenix & Tree Pendant, c.1930

An attractive Chinese carved jade pendant of pale yellow-green translucent tone with natural honey and russet inclusions.

The principal face is carved in relief with an auspicious mythical bird, most likely a fenghuang or Chinese phoenix, its long flowing plumage worked across the surface of the stone. The carver has skilfully incorporated areas of stronger yellow and russet coloration into the composition, giving additional definition to the bird and surrounding ornament.

The reverse is carved with a more restrained foliate or tree design, allowing much of the natural colour and translucency of the stone to remain visible.

The pendant has a pleasing waxy-to-vitreous polish and good translucency around the thinner areas. The material appears consistent with jade, probably jadeite or nephrite, although it has not been laboratory tested and is therefore described simply as jade.

Suspended from a later braided cord with bead, which is included for wear but is not believed to be original to the carving.
