19th Century Pricket Candle Chandelier

19th century
Description

This is a absolutely stunning, all original 19th century pricket chandelier. It is made from wood and gesso components, with 6 iron and brass arms complete with candle pricket, There is also a large blown glass ball in the centre which is a wonderful detail. Most likely this came from a church and would now make an amazing feature light over a dining table. Still perfectly useable with places to hold your candles. A wonderful piece to add atmosphere to a space.

Overall condition is very good with clear aged patina that we absolutely love. The only faults are an old fault within the glass ball but not a crack and one arm is missing its candle holder but still retains its pricket.

A pricket candle chandelier is a hanging lighting fixture that uses vertical metal spikes, known as prickets, to hold wax candles firmly in place rather than using sunken sockets. Originating in religious and grand domestic interiors during the medieval period, this design continued to be produced through the nineteenth century.

Traditional pricket chandeliers typically feature a central stem constructed from carved wood, plaster, or turned metal, often decorated with gesso and gold leaf. The extended arms are generally fashioned from wrought iron or brass, fitted with metal drip pans and central spikes to secure the candles.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples display signs of hand-craftsmanship, such as hand-hammered ironwork, hand-carved wooden components, and irregular structural proportions. Look for natural age wear, including flaking gesso, oxidisation on metal elements, and wax residue accumulation within the drip pans.

An antique pricket chandelier works as a focal architectural element suspended over a dining table, in an entryway, or above a hallway. Interior designers often contrast its aged texture with clean, contemporary walls or pair it with classic timber furniture to complement its period character.

Dust giltwood and iron components gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent chipping loose gesso or leaf. Avoid using water, liquid polish, or chemical cleaners on gilded surfaces, and ensure real candles are monitored to prevent heat damage to the upper structure.
