A fireback is a heavy cast iron plate positioned against the rear wall of a fireplace to protect the masonry from heat degradation and radiate thermal energy forward into the room. Originating in the late medieval period, patterned firebacks became prominent decorative hearth features throughout the 17th to 19th centuries.

Victorian firebacks were created using traditional sand casting techniques, where molten iron was poured into a sand mould impression taken from a carved wooden master pattern. This process allowed intricate relief details, religious iconography, and heraldic motifs to be produced in durable metal.

Authentic period firebacks display subtle surface irregularities, hand-poured iron thickness variances, and genuine age-related oxidisation or soot accumulation. Period examples feature detailed relief work and heavy construction rather than thin, uniform modern reproductions.

Beyond traditional fireplace installations, cast iron firebacks serve as wall-mounted decorative panels, dramatic kitchen splashbacks behind range cookers, or focal accents within alcoves and garden features.

Keep cast iron clean by removing dust with a dry cloth and brushing off loose rust with fine wire wool. Applying a thin coat of black grate polish or iron paste protects the metal from atmospheric moisture while maintaining its patinated dark finish.
