Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Firebacks originated in the late fifteenth century to protect the back wall of an open hearth masonry fireplace from extreme heat damage. During the Neoclassical and Victorian eras, these heavy plates were further embellished with ornate relief designs to act as decorative focal points while efficiently radiating heat back into the room.

Traditional firebacks were created using sand casting techniques, where wooden or carved master patterns were pressed into dense damp sand to form a mould. Molten grey iron was poured into the impression, resulting in a single heavy plate with textured surfaces and raised relief details.

Authentic period pieces exhibit uneven surface textures, slight casting imperfections, and a substantial, heavy mass. Genuine age shows through subtle surface oxidisation, soot residue in recessed details, and softening of sharp high-relief edges caused by centuries of thermal expansion and contraction.

A cast iron fireback can be positioned inside an active or decorative open fireplace alcove to provide contrast against light brick or stone. Alternatively, it can be mounted directly onto a focal wall or integrated into a modern stove backdrop as architectural wall art.

Keep the iron surface dry to prevent active corrosion, cleaning light dirt with a stiff dry brush. Periodic application of traditional black grate polish or iron paste restores the dark lustre, seals the metal, and protects against surface oxidisation.
