Norwegian guilloche enamel jewellery gained international prominence during the late 19th and mid-20th centuries, crafted by renowned silversmiths including David-Andersen and Aksel Holmsen. These pieces feature precise geometric patterns engraved into sterling silver using a rose-engine lathe before being coated with translucent enamel.

The process involves engine-turning or stamping intricate radiating patterns directly onto sterling silver. Layers of pulverized glass vitreous enamel are applied over the metal and fired at high temperatures in a kiln, resulting in a smooth, translucent finish that radiates light through the textured base metal.

Authentic pieces are typically stamped with makers marks, purity hallmarks such as 925S or STERLING, and country of origin markers like NORWAY. Inspecting the enamel under magnification can also reveal clean geometric engine-turning line work beneath undamaged enamel glaze.

A silver and enamel floral brooch can be fastened to the lapel of a tailored blazer, attached to a silk scarf, or pinned on a dark knit jumper to create subtle contrast. It can also serve as a decorative accent on a fabric handbag or coat lapel.

Enamel should be gently wiped with a soft, damp cloth and preserved away from extreme temperature changes, harsh chemicals, or abrasive cleaners. Store the brooch individually in a padded jewellery box to prevent scratch damage to the glass surface and slow silver tarnish.
