Antique Silver Cutlery Set.

19th century
Description

Good Victorian Old English pattern cutlery service; the service contains 56 pieces in total and is for eight people. The spoons and forks are all by the same maker and are the same date range, the tea spoons being one year earlier. The knives are more recent which is not unusual as the original knives need to be replaced as the handles eventually part company with the blades as they go in and out of hot water over the years. Modern knives are hard soldered to prevent this occurring. These are hard soldered knives. Lovely condition, well regarded maker, ready to use and enjoy. The service comprises of:

8 x Table spoons.

8 x Table forks.

8 x Dessert spoons.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Complete silver flatware services emerged prominently during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to accommodate multi-course dining. Standardised sets were produced by silversmiths to include matching table knives, forks, and specialised spoons for formal entertainment.

Antique silver cutlery is typically crafted from sterling silver, containing 92.5 percent pure silver, or high-grade silver plate over base metals like nickel silver. Knife blades often utilised forged steel or stainless steel paired with hollow or solid silver handles.

Authenticity is verified through official hallmark stamps indicating silver purity, city assay office marks, maker initials, and date letters. Additional indicators include balanced weight, natural surface patination, and minor historical wear on spoon tips and fork tines.

Silver flatware can be integrated into contemporary dining settings by pairing polished pieces with minimalist ceramic tableware and natural linen table runners. Mixing historic silver service with modern glassware creates a layered, textured aesthetic.

Hand wash silver flatware in warm water with mild detergent and dry immediately with a soft cloth to prevent water spots. Store pieces in tarnish-resistant cloth rolls or lined canteens away from excess humidity and sulfur-containing materials.
