Description:

Skilled cabinetmakers crafted this fine-quality antique oak roll top desk from good-quality English oak, so the exterior features well-pronounced fielded (bevel-edged) panels throughout. In addition, the desk comprises two large internal drawers and ten pigeonholes in the top section. Two pen trays sit alongside them, ideal for storing stationery, paperwork, letters and other accoutrements. The maker gave the top section an "S"-shaped design, so the desk stands freestanding at the centre of a room.

Condition Report:

As detailed above, this desk survives with seven drawers and a complete interior, all in excellent original condition. Our workshop has cleaned and hand French-polished the desk to a professional standard, so the colour and finish are excellent. There are no splits in the tambour, which, again, is common in this type of desk. There are nominal old-use marks to the leading edges, including the desktop and drawer bottoms. However, nothing is significant given the desk's age. There are no ink or water stains or scratches to the main desktop. As explained above, the original wooden locking mechanism still works correctly. It secures the tambour and both pedestals from a single brass lock. You must assemble the desk properly and stand it on a level surface for this to work correctly. A working lock, with two keys, secures the top section. This antique pedestal desk is well made, solid in its joints, and ready to use.

Produced between 1901 and 1910, Edwardian rolltop desks typically feature solid oak construction, twin drawer pedestals, and a slatted wood tambour door that slides down to conceal internal compartments and pigeonholes.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from native timbers like oak or mahogany, utilising hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, flexible cloth-backed wooden slats for the tambour shutter, and brass mortise locking mechanisms.

Authentic items feature age-appropriate wear to the wooden runners, original brass keyhole escutcheons, hand-sawn drawer bottoms, and intact flexible slats along the curved side profiles.

Position the desk against a neutral wall in a home office or study, pairing it with a tailored leather swivel chair and classic task lighting to balance historical craftsmanship with functional modern use.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually, ensuring the slatted tambour runners remain clear of debris to prevent sticking.
