Coffer Rare 17th Century Welsh Oak Gower Peninsula C1670

17th century
Description

A superb 17th-century Welsh oak coffer from the Gower Peninsula, with a richly carved front displaying the distinctive decorative tradition associated with furniture from the Gower region.

The coffer retains attractive ebonised decoration, providing a striking contrast against the wonderfully aged oak. The top is particularly fine, constructed with four beautifully fielded panels and retaining its original pin-and-loop hinges.

Raised on stile feet, with characteristic hooded ends, the coffer has excellent proportions and a strong architectural presence.

Of particular note is the exceptional surface throughout. The oak has developed a superb deep colour and rich, untouched patina, while the panelled back retains a wonderfully dry, crusty historic surface that speaks to the coffer's considerable age and authenticity.

A highly decorative and evocative piece of early Welsh vernacular furniture, with strong regional character and a particularly appealing untouched appearance.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A coffer is a traditional wooden storage chest constructed with joined oak panels, widely manufactured during the 17th century for storing household linens, textiles, and personal belongings.

These coffers were crafted using traditional mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs, incorporating hand-carved front panels and framed panel lids made from local English and Welsh oak.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of hand-planed timber, original wooden peg construction, irregular hand-carved details, and aged patination accumulated over centuries.

An antique coffer functions effectively as a focal piece at the foot of a bed, as entry hall storage, or as a characterful coffee table in a modern living space.

Maintain the surface patination by dusting regularly with a clean, dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, avoiding placement near direct heat sources.
