Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Neoclassical fire fender is a low decorative metal border positioned around a fireplace hearth to retain embers and ash. Popular during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these fenders feature classical design motifs inspired by ancient Greek and Roman ornament, such as urns, scrollwork, and mythical creatures.

Victorian fire fenders were predominantly crafted from sheet or cast brass, iron, or steel. Decorative brass facings were produced through stamping, embossing, or casting processes, while heavy iron inner frames and side brackets provided stability near open heat sources.

Authentic antique fire fenders feature construction indicators such as hand-riveted iron returns, stamped or cast brass detailing, and natural oxidisation in recessed areas. Wear patterns consistent with historical heat exposure and polished raised surfaces also distinguish genuine period items from modern reproductions.

A brass fire fender can be placed at the base of an active fireplace or wood-burning stove to frame the hearth with warm metallic tones. In non-working fireplaces, it serves as an architectural anchor when paired with decorative logs, terracotta vessels, or freestanding firescreens.

Regular maintenance involves dusting the surface with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove ash and dirt particles. To preserve the original surface patina, avoid harsh chemical solvents; mild brass polish may be applied sparingly to high points, leaving recessed detailed reliefs unpolished to maintain contrast.
