Art Nouveau Copper and Brass Fire Fender C. 1890

19th century
Description

A particularly good quality copper and brass fire fender with beautiful and elaborately cast sinuous solid brass corner spandrels of Art Nouveau design and a lovely planished copper front panel all set on flattened and beaded brass bun feet. In excellent original condition without damage and of a good large size, and with only minor and superficial marks and small dings consistent with age and careful use.

In the 19th century most of the rooms in a house had a chimney for open fires and the fender would be placed to denote the hearth and stop logs rolling off and reaching the rug or soft furnishings.

The fender is shown here with a pair of early 20th century brass firedogs and a duck basket grate, these are not included in the sale price but are available separately.

Dimensions are:

47.5 inches wide, 14.75 inches deep and 6.5 inches tall.

For metric please multiply by 2.5

This Art Nouveau fire fender originates from the nineteenth century. The piece combines a hammered copper body with a polished brass top rail, corner brackets displaying whiplash scrollwork, and turned brass bun feet along the base. The front panel shows a planished copper finish in coppery and golden tones, accented by cast brass hardware with minor surface marks consistent with age. The fender measures 121 cm wide, 37 cm deep, and 17 cm tall in practical terms. Placed on the hearth around an open fireplace in a living room or reception room today, it serves to contain embers and logs while protecting surrounding floor coverings from stray sparks.

An Art Nouveau fire fender is a low metal curb placed around the hearth, originating in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to contain embers and ashes. This design period featured organic motifs, whiplash curves, and mixed-metal construction such as copper and brass.

Late Victorian and Art Nouveau fenders were predominantly constructed using sheet copper, cast or stamped brass, and wrought iron. The metals were frequently hammered, repoussed, or riveted together to create contrasting textures and tones.

Authentic late 19th-century fenders typically show hand-hammered textures, natural patination, and hand-riveted or cast brass joinery rather than modern welding. Period examples also feature hand-finished edges, original mounting brackets, and minor wear consistent with heat exposure.

A metallic fire fender adds texture and historical grounding when placed around a decorative or functional hearth in living rooms and reception spaces. It pairs effectively with natural stone hearths, tiled inserts, and neutral colour schemes.

Maintain the metalwork by dusting regularly with a dry, soft cloth and avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners that strip historical patina. If light brightening is desired, gentle metal polishes designed specifically for antique copper or brass may be applied sparingly.
