Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1870s:
Pierced brass fretwork: mechanically stamped patterns standard in late Victorian hearth furniture.
Cast columns with turned ball finials: typical mid to late nineteenth-century construction.
Dark unpolished patina inside the sides: natural oxidisation from decades near coal fires.
Fine surface scratches throughout: honest wear from routine domestic cleaning and hearth use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Victorian fire fender dates from 1870 and belongs to the English Country House style. Constructed from brass with a warm gold colour, the piece has a polished finish. The design incorporates a central band of pierced geometric fretwork running horizontally across the front plate, flanked by turned corner pillars topped with spherical ball finials, and a stepped moulded base running along the floor. Internal dimensions measure 93 cm wide by 15 cm deep, while overall dimensions are 16 cm high by 98 cm wide and 18 cm deep. The fender is suitable for positioning directly onto a fireplace hearth in a living room or study to contain embers and frame an open fire.

A fire fender is a low rail or barrier positioned around an open hearth to contain ash and embers. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, brass fenders became standard decorative features in Georgian and Victorian homes.

Authentic 19th century fenders were primarily crafted from sheet brass or cast brass, often featuring hand-pierced geometric patterns, cast corner pillars, and decorative urn or finial tops.

Look for signs of hand-finished metalwork, such as irregular pierced fretwork, hand-cut joinery or rivets on the underside, and authentic oxidisation in unpolished crevices.

Position the fender around a working or decorative fireplace hearth to add architectural structure, pairing warm metallic tones with contemporary hearth tiles or traditional stone surrounds.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and polish occasionally using a specialist brass cleaner to maintain shine, taking care to avoid harsh abrasives that could wear thin sheet brass.
