Hermes, Paris - Horse Head / Equestrian Ice Cube Bucket C.1960

1940 - 1960
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

An iconic piece of barware, this silver plated ice bucket / server was made by the top-notch French silversmith, Ravinet d'Enfert, for the French fashion house Hermes of Paris.

This rare and sought-after piece is the perfect equestrian accessory, a simple elegant design with the two horse head handles. It is fully marked on the side. It has just returned from our silversmith's workshop where it has been professionally cleaned and polished, restoring it to it's former glory.

Thierry Hermès on the Grands Boulevards in Paris, Hermès began as a humble harness and saddlery workshop serving European noblemen. Over six generations, the family-led business transitioned from equestrian gear into a global luxury empire encompassing leather goods, silver, silk scarves, and ready-to-wear fashion.

Originally started by E. Tonnelier in 1845, it became Ravinet d'Enfert in 1891 after Louis Ravinet and Charles d'Enfert joined forces. Famed for Art Nouveau and Art Deco designs, the firm created luxury silverware for elite clients—including custom pieces for Hermès—before closing in 1984.

Excellent condition measuring 8" x 5 1/4" x 6 1/2" tall.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Equestrian motifs gained significant popularity in mid-20th-century luxury barware, particularly among French design houses that drew upon saddlery traditions to create functional accessories for entertaining.

These vessels are generally constructed from a solid base metal, such as brass or copper, electroplated with a durable layer of silver to achieve a reflective, polished finish.

Authentic pieces usually feature stamped makers marks or hallmarks near the upper rim or underside, accompanied by uniform electroplating and detailed casting on decorative handles.

Position the bucket on a dark wood sideboard, drinks trolley, or bar cabinet alongside vintage crystal glassware to create a refined centrepiece for entertaining.

Wash with mild dish soap and warm water after use, dry completely with a soft cloth, and polish periodically using non-abrasive silver polish to prevent tarnish and oxidisation.
