Antique Silver Novelty Pill Box - Snipe

1900 - 1920
Description

This is a beautiful antique sterling silver pill box, fashioned as a wading bird.

He carries import marks for Chester 1902, with the importer's stamp for Berthold Muller. The head pulls off to reveal a partial hallmark. As befits a piece of this quality, the hallmarks are hidden away, underneath the neck. He stands proudly and the detailing of the body is fantastic. The silver is in excellent condition.

I am no bird expert and have described it as a snipe. I think the neck is too thin for a woodcock and the legs not long enough for a curlew, but I am happy to be corrected!

Dimensions:

Weight: 24g

Length: 5.5cm

Height: 3.5cm

Width: 2cm.

Complimentary gift wrapping is available on request.

Post and packaging are free within the UK. Overseas buyers please e-mail for postage costs and please note: Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to buying.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A silver novelty box is a small, functional container crafted into whimsical or naturalistic shapes, such as animals, birds, or everyday items, which became widely popular during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

These items are typically crafted from solid sterling silver or silver plate, utilizing techniques such as casting, chasing, and engraving to produce detailed textures imitating fur, feathers, or fabrics.

Authenticity is verified through stamped hallmarks indicating silver purity, city marks, and maker marks, alongside fine hand-chased detailing and appropriate signs of light historical friction near seams and hinges.

Small novelty items are best styled as subtle decorative accents on an office desk, a dressing table tray, or integrated into a curated display on bookshelf stacks.

Gently polish the surface using a soft microfibre cloth and a specialized silver polishing compound, taking care around delicate joints and avoiding complete submersion in water.
